Chelsea news: Alvaro Morata may not play at his best until Christmas - Graeme Souness

CHELSEA striker Alvaro Morata is yet to convince Graeme Souness if he can hack it in the Premier League.

Morata misses penalty in Community Shield

Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in July for a club-record fee of £70million.

His Blues career started badly with a missed penalty in the Community Shield shootout defeat to Arsenal earlier this month.

However, he netted on his Premier League debut, coming off the bench to head home Willian’s cross in the 3-2 defeat to Burnley on the opening day.

Morata is starts for the first time against Tottenham at Wembley this afternoon (4pm) but Souness says it will take him a while to settle, and reckons Chelsea fans should only start to judge by Christmas.

“Our league is harder than the European leagues but the top men get around it,” the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports.

“A top man will be a top player in any league. He has to prove to me that he’s the real deal.

“At Real Madrid you can’t be critical because some real top players haven’t established themselves there.

Chelsea news: Alvaro Morata may not be at his best until Christmas, says Graeme Souness

“He goes to Juventus, I think 27 goals in in two years. I’ll wait and see, ask me again at Christmas time.

“He looks to be willing, he wants to get in behind, run in behind, stretch opposition.

“If you’re a midfield player you like to have a team-mate like that. Has he got quick, sharp feet that the top strikers have? I’m not so sure. We’ll have to wait and see.”
