JOSE MOURINHO thinks Manchester United can sign Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale after performing background checks with the Spanish club.

Manchester United are refusing to give up on raiding Real Madrid for Bale.

Following their 2-1 European Super Cup defeat on Tuesday night, Jose Mourinho had dismissed the Red Devils’ pursuit of the Wales international as being over.

"I think now everybody knows he is going to stay," Mourinho said.

However, despite his comments, there seems to be a belief behind the scenes that things might happen.

Reports yesterday claimed Florentino Perez had privately told the United manager that Bale could be allowed to leave should they receive a suitable offer.

And The Sun are now saying that Mourinho is confident he can still get a deal for the 27-year-old over the line.

It is said the 54-year-old has performed background checks with his former club and has been told there is a chance Bale could be let go.

Madrid, however, want to be afforded enough time to bring in a top replacement.

Mourinho also feels that, by offering Bale a weekly wage of £500,000-a-week, that might be enough to convince Bale to leave for Old Trafford.

So confident is he that United can sign the former Tottenham star, Mourinho has also supposedly told Ed Woodward to launch a £100million bid.

Bale talked up Mourinho last night by insisting the Red Devils are not too far off being a European force once again.

“It did them good to win a few trophies last year and I think they’re getting back to where they belong,” he said.

“They gave us a difficult game and I see no reason why they can’t be a force in the Champions League this season.

“Jose’s a great manager, he’s done everything in football, he knows what he’s doing and I’m sure he’s building a great team for what he hopes to achieve there. I’m sure they will do fantastic this season."
