Costa wants to join Atletico and Chelsea are happy for him to leave.

But the La Liga side are struggling to work out how to buy the player when they cannot field him for six months due to a transfer embargo.

Nevertheless, Atletico star Stefan Savic says he hopes a deal for the Spain international can be wrapped up this summer.

“If he comes, we know he could improve the quality of any team,” Savic told reporters after Atletico beat Brighton 3-2 in a friendly yesterday.

Atletico’s FIFA-imposed transfer ban is similar to the one Barca were put under in 2015.

Barca signed Arda Turan that summer and the player spent six months with the squad without making an appearance until the New Year.

There is a proposal for Costa to join Atletico - as Turan did to Barcelona - but then head out on loan somewhere for six months, with AC Milan a viable option.

His agent Jorge Mendes has supposedly urged the striker to move to the San Siro, with half an eye on him playing for Spain in the World Cup next summer.

But Costa himself isn’t keen on a move to Italy - even if it is for the short term.

Alvaro Morata has already been brought in to replace the 28-year-old and Chelsea are keen to get Costa’s £185,000-a-week salary off their wage bill.
