The Leicester forward sustained the injury in training with the squad at St George’s Park, and immediately returned to his club for treatment.

Vardy was pencilled in to play at least some part of the World Cup qualifying match against Scotland at Hampden Park and the friendly against France in Paris on Tuesday.

Southgate has decided not to call up a replacement, which leaves the England manager with Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Jermain Defoe as front line strikers for the two matches, with Wayne Rooney not in the squad.

Vardy started on the bench for the Group F win against Lithuania at Wembley in March but came on to score England’s second goal in the 2-0 win, his sixth for his country.

He had, though, started the previous game, the 1-0 friendly defeat against Germany in Dortmund four days earlier.

Vardy had been looking to win his 17th cap and Southgate is likely to use Kane as the spearhead of his attack in Glasgow, with the Tottenham forward available to him for the first time since he took over as England manager.

The striker's 24 league goals last season led Leicester to a shock Premier League triumph.

He has made a total of 192 appearances for the Foxes and netted 66 goals.

But the injury to Vardy could give United youngster Marcus Rashford a chance of a starting place.
