As United manager Jose Mourinho said that Zlatan Ibrahimovic faces a “really hard” road to recovery if he is to beat his season-ending knee ligament injury and play again, Martial had scored his 25th goal for the club he joined in 2015 from Monaco.

And by reaching that number, he sparked a bonus clause that will see United pay Monaco an additional £8.3 million.

Mourinho dedicated yesterday’s impressive to the 35-year-old Swede Ibrahimovic and defender Marcos Rojo who were injured in the Europa League win over Anderlecht on Thursday.

And with the pair facing knee surgery, Mourinho conceded that Ibrahimovic, in particular, faces a battle to return.

“Everyone is very sad. We were thinking about them. They have to be strong,” said Mourinho. “Unfortunately they won’t be the first or last players to get an important injury.

“No player deserves to be injured but I think in this case it’s even more sad because Zlatan, in this stage of his career, it’s really, really hard.

“And Marcos probably at this moment in his career is playing very well for us and also finally getting a position as central defender in the international team, so we’re really sad for them.”
