Portugal's Helena Costa is the first female manager to be handed the top job after being appointed at Clermont Foot in France.

And when asked for his thoughts on women managers in the game, Wenger revealed his happiness at the move in comic fashion.

"I like it, we have men managing women why should women not manage men," Wenger said.

"It happens to all of us that we are managed at home by women!

With tonge firmly in cheek, Wenger continued: "So why not?

The Frenchman went on to add: "The only thing I believe is always to defend competence.

"Are you masculine, feminine, if you are competent you get the job.

"Having looked at her experience, she has very little experience as a coach but maybe she has top qualities and will show that.

"It's good that the girls have a chance with the men, why not?"

Costa will join Clermont at the end of the season, when she will leave the Iran women's team.

The 36-year-old is a former scout for Scottish Premiership side Celtic, and has has also coached Benfica's male youth teams and the Qatar women's side.
