Bristol City boss Lee Johnson aims cheeky dig at Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United playing style after Carabao Cup shock

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson enjoyed a cheeky little dig at Manchester United’s playing style under Jose Mourinho with his comments after yesterday’s match.

Johnson’s men sprung a shock on the Carabao Cup holders with a 2-1 win in the quarter-final, with Korey Smith netting a memorable stoppage-time winner.

While United have taken some criticism for their performances in the big games this season, Mourinho won’t have been expecting a footballing lesson from a manager in the Championship.

Still, speaking after the game, Johnson seemed to become the latest to take a dig at United’s approach, saying his side looked more like the Premier League team on the night.

‘I thought at times tonight we looked like the Premier League side,’ Johnson told Sky Sports.

‘The way we passed and moved and the speed on the counter attack. Our goalkeeper had to make two or three fantastic saves but that was always going to happen.

‘To beat Manchester United is outstanding. It hasn’t quite sunk in but I’m so proud of my players – they are a special group – and for the supporters too. It’s a while since we had a result like that at Ashton Gate.’

Bristol City will now take on Manchester City in the semi-finals, with Chelsea and Arsenal meeting in the other tie to decide this season’s finalists.
