Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hit back at Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho for his post-match comments on today’s Manchester Derby.
The Spanish tactician could be justified in feeling a little aggrieved at the way Mourinho played down his side’s tremendous success in the Premier League this season.
City made history by becoming the first team to ever win 14 consecutive league games in a single season, and also ended United’s run of 40 games unbeaten at Old Trafford.
And while there may have been a small piece of fortune over both City’s goals, Guardiola rightly pointed out that his team dominated possession and had the bulk of the chances on the night in an extremely positive performance away from home.
Mourinho, however, turned the focus onto the referee afterwards, and even called City ‘lucky’ to be where they are this season.
Guardiola seemed to take aim at Mourinho’s tactics, however, saying he was pleased with his team’s ‘honest’ and attack-minded approach at Old Trafford.
‘Last season it was the same – we won here and it was the referee. Today as well,’ Guardiola was quoted in the Metro.
‘Yesterday he spoke about the referee. We are an honest team. We had 75% ball possession, which means we wanted to play. We came here and did that.’
