Chelsea ace seeks exit, eyes forcing ideal Barcelona switch

The fall-out from Antonio Conte’s decision to drop Chelsea ace David Luiz against Man Utd is reportedly continuing with doubts now emerging over his future.

In Conte’s defence, the decision paid off in that specific game as the Blues secured a 1-0 win over the Red Devils, but much to the surprise of many, the Evening Standard reported earlier this week on how the ‘rift’ between the pair dates back to the start of the season.

As a result, that would suggest that the problem runs a lot deeper, and so it has raised question marks over the Brazilian international’s future at Stamford Bridge, having returned to west London last year after a stint at Paris Saint-Germain to win a Premier League title with the club.

According to Diario Gol, Luiz is reportedly eyeing a move to Barcelona, as he looks to take advantage of a problematic area in Ernesto Valverde’s squad.

Javier Mascherano and Thomas Vermaelen are both being linked with exits, as per the report, while the former isn’t getting any younger and so even if he does stay he needs to be replaced sooner rather than later.

That would leave the Catalan giants light in that department with Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti the first-choice options, and so additional depth and quality would certainly be needed to continue to compete on various fronts next season.

In turn, that’s where Luiz would hope he can find an opportunity to exploit and with doubts over his Chelsea future, it could be an ideal solution for all parties.

However, it isn’t suggested that the interest is being reciprocated by Barcelona as of yet, and so it remains to be seen whether Luiz is a target that Valverde would welcome.

What the 30-year-old does bring is experience, a winning mentality, character and much more which he has proven at the highest level, and so while he may not be a long-term solution at the back, he could be a more than useful addition if his time at Chelsea really is coming to a close.
