Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hits back at Everton manager in transfer saga

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has hit back at criticism from Everton manager Roberto Martinez in the transfer furore surrounding John Stones, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Portuguese coach appeared to be unhappy with accusations from his counterpart that the Blues had been ‘disrespectful’ in their efforts to sign the 21-year-old. The manager then appeared to hit back at his Catalan counterpart with something of a personal jibe.

“My feeling is just one and I’m not speaking about Everton or Stones. I’m just speaking in general,” said Mourinho.

“If I could, I would speak with you once in a month. And there are other people in football who if they could they would have a press conference every day. And I don’t want to say anything else.”

Stamford Bridge skipper John Terry has also got involved in the transfer saga, further angering the Toffees chief. The 34-year-old claimed that Stones could be ‘one for the future’ for the London side, which Martinez believes was an ‘illegal’ public comment about the Blues’ ongoing pursuit of the England defender [BBC].

42-year-old Martinez has revealed that the transfer rumours have affected his star player [The Guardian], which may indicate that Stones himself is agitating to secure a move away from Merseyside.

The Goodison Park outfit have already rejected two offers for the player, of £20 million and £26 million [Guardian], and while it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will make another move for the defender, there is also reported interest from Manchester United [Daily Mirror], which could further complicate the situation.

The aforementioned bids have been received after the England international enjoyed a season in which he broke in to the Everton starting XI. Sylvain Distin’s underwhelming form allowed him to establish himself in the team, and the youngster went on to make 23 appearances despite several injuries. He also made his competitive England debut last September, and is now a regular in the senior squad.
