The deep-lying playmaker enjoyed a glorious career in Italy, where he represented all of Serie A’s big three.

The 36-year-old had a year left on his contract at Juventus, but the Bianconeri agreed to mutually terminate his deal one year ahead of time in order to allow the veteran to move to the United States.

Pirlo had been present in New York on Sunday evening for the derby between NYCFC and their state rivals New York Red Bulls.

The Sky Blues welcomed Pirlo to the club on their official website with the tagline “Pirlo: Made in Italy. Now in NYC.” and have given the midfielder the number 21 shirt.

Pirlo joins new teammates David Villa and Frank Lampard at the club, and according to the BBC, is expected to make his debut alongside the former Chelsea man against Toronto FC on Sunday at the Yankee Stadium.

Pirlo has enjoyed great recent success with Juventus, winning four Serie A titles, the Italian Cup and the Italian Super Cup twice.

During his time with Milan he was a two-time Champions League winner, and also lifted the Italian title twice.

Pirlo was linked to both Liverpool and Chelsea in June, although at the time preferred to dismiss the rumours and indicate he would still be playing at Juventus beyond the summer, via the Express.
