It was today announced that Costa will contest his FA charge of violent conduct in the Capital One Cup second-leg of the semi-final, in which the striker seemed to intentionally stamp on both Emre Can and Martin Skrtel of Liverpool.

In response to the charge, the Blues cancelled their pre-match press conference, and team-mate Cahill has now also expressed support for his physical team-mate, insisting that the 26-year-old’s on-field behaviour is a quality Chelsea are lucky to have in their side.

“It’s his character. It’s the way he plays. He’s a handful for a defender,” Cahill was quoted by BBC Sport.

“One of his attributes, as well as his skills and scoring fantastic goals, is that he puts his foot in.

“Would you change him? Probably not, and I don’t think you should. Certainly as a team-mate, he’s somebody you want in your team.

“It’s a strength he has. You have seen how good he is with his feet and how skilful he is for a big guy but the way he has adapted to the Premier League – he is a physical guy.”

The leading Premier League goalscorer could miss the huge title-clash with Manchester City on Saturday if the FA find him guilty of violent conduct.
