The Red Devils sit seventh in the Premier League table after the first six games, but are already eight points behind leaders Chelsea, having managed just two victories in all competitions.

United spent £150m on fresh talent this summer, but are still eager for reinforcements in both midfield and in defence, where they are currently undergoing something of an injury crisis.

Chilean midfielder Vidal, 27, is a long-term target for Van Gaal, and the Dutchman is desperate to finally get his man in January, and add a charismatic and versatile midfield powerhouse to his ranks.

Ogbonna, 26, is an Italian international defender, who has plenty of Serie A experience having played for Torino between 2006 and 2013. He could prove to be an alternative to Mats Hummels, who has seemingly ruled out a move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund.

The source confirms by adding that Van Gaal has firmly set his sights on both Vidal and Ogbonna – and wants to land the Juve’ pair in a double deal ahead of the January transfer window.
