The 25 year old moved to Westfalenstadion on loan from Bayern Munich in 2008 and permanently joined the club a year later.

During his time at the club, the German World Cup winner has become one of the best centre-backs in the world and insists he will not be tempted by a move to a big foreign club like Manchester United or Barcelona and will instead look to emulate legends like Paolo Maldini and Steven Gerrard by having a successful career without moving clubs.

”It’s nice to hear that big clubs like that are interested in you,” he said. “I take that as a compliment. But it doesn’t influence me in any way, otherwise. We earn enough here in Dortmund.

”There are some [who stay at one club for their whole careers], and they are all really great players. Paolo Maldini of Milan, for example.”

Hummels was understood to be one of Louis van Gaal’s main transfer targets this summer, with the Red Devils boss looking to sign a quality centre-back to fix United’s defensive problems.

Unfortunately, it now appears that the Dutchman will have to look elsewhere for a new central defender.
