Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has urged new manager Louis van Gaal to make him the club’s new captain following the departure of Nemanja Vidic.

The Red Devils are on the search for a new skipper following Vidic’s departure to Inter Milan this summer, with the Serbian being the previous holder of the armband.

It’s believed that van Gaal’s decision has fallen to two names – Rooney and Robin van Persie – and the England international hopes that it’s he who gets the nod from the boss.

“Of course I would like the captaincy but it’s the manager’s decision who he chooses,” the 28-year-old was quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“I think he wants to work with the players and then choose a captain from there.

“I don’t think he was ever going to just walk in and choose a player from the off.”

Rooney and van Gaal are currently away with the rest of the United squad on their pre-season tour of the USA, where things started well on Wednesday with a 7-0 hammering of LA Galaxy.

In that match the Dutchman experimented with a 3-5-2 formation, with it believed the 62-year-old largely made that decision as he wanted t0 play two strikers.

This bodes well for Rooney, who was often asked to play out of position last term as David Moyes tried to cram the players on offer into a 4-2-3-1 style.
