After Real Madrid secured the signing of James Rodriguez from AS Monaco the Spanish giants have given Manchester United the go-ahead to sign Angel di Maria, CaughtOffside understands.
The Red Devils are in a two horse race to land the Argentina international along with Paris Saint-Germain, after di Maria admitted earlier in the summer that he is unsure whether his future lies at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
That doubt has increased since the quick succession of new arrivals, with Toni Kroos having also signed for Madrid from Bayern Munich on Thursday.
It means di Maria’s chances of getting into the starting XI have dramatically decreased and now the 26-year-old is ready to leave the Spanish capital for pastures new.
Whilst it appeared PSG were the favourites for the Argentine due to their presence in the Champions League in the 2014/15 season, the Ligue 1 champions have been scuppered by UEFA’s FFP ruling.
Having already been fined £20m in the last year by Europe’s governing body, they cannot afford to breach the rule again or could risk expulsion from the Champions League themselves.
PSG have already signed David Luiz from Chelsea this summer for a fee of around £40m and sanctioning the same for di Maria would be impossible.
That is why they have proposed to Los Blancos that they take the South American on season’s long loan and then make that permanent in 12 months, but the Spaniards want the cash immediately in order to help balance their own books.
United meanwhile are financially sound and have given their new manager Louis van Gaal a hefty budget to go out and sign new talent, with di Maria a key target for the Dutchman.
So with Madrid wanting to sell and PSG out of the picture, the deal could well happen in the near future.
