Tottenham Hotspur confirm Serge Aurier signing, shirt number

Tottenham Hotspur made their fourth signing of the summer official today. After a few links over the course of the last several weeks, the club presented former Paris Saint-Germain fullback Serge Aurier as a Spurs player. He signs on a six year deal. He will wear shirt no. 24.

The fee is reportedly around £23m though terms have not fully been disclosed by either club. The 24-year-old joined PSG on loan from Toulouse in the summer window of 2014 and was sold permanently to the French giants the following summer. The Ivorian International made a total of 70 appearances across all competitions but was seen as surplus with the signing of Dani Alves and emergence of Thomas Meunier.

With the sale of Kyle Walker, Spurs needed to address the depth issue at the position. Kieran Trippier provides great passing but is not known for his take-on ability. Kyle Walker-Peters has shown flashes of the future, but he is probably a year or two away from being a full time starter for Spurs. There was belief just a few days ago that new signing Davinson Sanchez was going to be the answer for depth at both CB and RB, but with today’s signing, Sanchez will most likely focus on being in the back line with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

In the official release on Tottenham’s website, Aurier had the following to say:

This is a fresh start for me and I will do everything to make the Spurs fanbase, which is huge and diverse, proud of me. The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier.”

There are mere hours to go in the transfer window and Spurs still have a couple of spots they could use new players in, but the right side of the pitch now appears to be reloaded.
