Christian Eriksen on transfer link to Barcelona: “It’s nothing”

Spurs’ Danish Dynamite isn’t getting sucked into rumors linking him to Barca.

You’ve probably seen the rumors in the Spanish and UK football media: Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen is reportedly the back-up plan for Barcelona in the event that they’re not able to prise Coutinho away from Liverpool before the end of the summer transfer window.

Eriksen was directly asked about the links to La Liga during an interview on BBC Radio 5Live, and he said, basically, it’s all stuff and nonsense.

“It’s nothing. Ever since I’ve played football and been scouted the first few times I’ve been linked away, to every corner of the world.

“They’re a great club of course and it means you’re doing a good thing (to get noticed) and it means you need to keep going until you see or hear something.

“Until then it’s just rumours so it’s nothing to comment about really.”

Eriksen is well-versed in media relations, and so this is your standard boilerplate “sure it’d be great but this is all paper talk and I’m happy at Spurs” response. Which, if you’re Eriksen, is the right decision to both shut down nonsense rumors but also keep your potential future career options open.

Real talk now, Eriksen would be friggin’ fantastic at Barcelona, and deep down we all know it and are surprised that he hasn’t been linked with a big-money move before now. That said, if Barca are having difficulties trying to sign Coutinho away from Liverpool, one can’t imagine they’d have much more luck trying to sign one of Tottenham’s best players away while Daniel Levy is still alive and not under the influence of psychotropic substances.

Besides, Eriksen’s already played with Paulinho once. It sure doesn’t look like he’s that keen to do so again.
