When Tottenham Hotspur last played Bournemouth, it was one of the last remaining matches at White Hart Lane. Jack Wilshere was on loan with the Cherries, and Spurs were second in the league. Spurs got a goal from Vincent Janssen, injured Jack Wilshere (again), and walked off with a highly entertaining 4-0 win. I remember, see, because I was in the Park Lane for that match. (Thanks, y’all.) It’s a new year and a different venue, but Spurs should still be the heavy favorites to walk away from this match with all three points.

There’s no Jack Wilshere to pick on, but there should be a huge difference between Spurs and Bournemouth today. Eddie Howe has not enjoyed the start of this season’s Premier League, having won only one of their first six matches. That puts them squarely in relegation territory. I don’t think they’re really that bad, but it’s difficult to escape a bad start in the league, and the Cherries have been pretty bad thus far. They’ll rely on the 1-2 punch of Josh King and Jermain Defoe for offense, and while Howe likes to press and counter, it would surprise no one if he decides to park the bus at Wembley today.
As for Spurs, the intrigue comes in the starting lineup. With a Champions League trip to Real Madrid looming, Spurs have some big decisions to make as to who plays and who is rested, none bigger than in the center of midfield. One of Moussa Sissoko or Harry Winks will play alongside Eric Dier, with the one not chosen tapped to start at the Bernabeu.
Same with the fullbacks. It’s likely that Kieran Trippier will get the nod at right back, and don’t be surprised if we see young Kyle Walker-Peters play on the left, giving Ben Davies a much-needed rest.
Spurs still haven’t dispelled the last curse: the win-at-home-in-the-league-at-Wembley curse. Wouldn’t it be nice if the high flying Spurs could finally get that monkey off their backs?
