Report: City Football Group to purchase Girona FC in Spain

A report out of Spanish newspaper Expansión could be very interesting for fans of Manchester City. The report claims City Football Group are closing in on a purchase for Girona FC, a team newly promoted to La Liga this upcoming season.

The name of the club should be familiar to City supporters as Girona loaned a few City youngsters last season and want to do it again to help build their squad into one able to compete in the Spanish top tier.

Pere Guadriola seems at the heart of this bit of business for CFG. The brother of City manager Pep Guardiola, Pere leads Media Base Sports, the company that purchased Girona a few years ago and alleviated them of £3 million in debt that threatened to close the club. Once Girona reached the top flight however, the club will reportedly be acquired by CFG to grow their expansive network of clubs.

Girona will be the newest club to join the list as CFG continues to expand. Already included in the network are Manchester City (England), New York City FC (USA), Melbourne City (Australia), Yokohama F. Marinos (Japan) and Club Atlético Torque (Uruguay).

The plan seems to be to use Girona as a place to send young City players not ready for action with the first team, giving them a taste of experience in one of Europe’s best leagues.

Girona could function as the final step to first team football at Manchester City. For example, young Spanish right back Pablo Maffeo, who had a couple of exciting appearances in Manchester under Pep, is expected to join Girona on loan again this season to have the chance to face teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia and others.
