After an unsuccessful attempt to sign Leonardo Bonucci last summer, Manchester City are preparing to pounce on the Italian in the next transfer window, according to reports from The Telegraph.

Pep Guardiola has made his admiration for the 29-year-old clear and will undoubtedly take any chance to bring him to the Etihad.

The clear-cut liabilities within the City squad this season lie mainly in defense. With disappointing performances all over the back line all season, as well as Vincent Kompany’s constant fitness problems, many preventable goals have been leaked, causing points to be dropped in several matches.

“We should have won that” has become a frequent saying that sums up the campaign. This needs to be put to an end as soon as possible, hopefully with several defensive signings. Leonardo Bonucci would be the perfect signing as he is arguably the best defender on the planet at the moment, and he would fit straight in to Pep Guardiola’s system.

As per usual, City will be asked to spend an enormous amount of money on the Juventus star. He could become the most expensive defender of all time should City accept Juve's £50 million asking price. This will worry many fans as previous big money defenders brought to the club, such as Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi, have not shined as brightly as hoped.

It is difficult to say if this deal is likely, but with news of Bonucci's multiple bust-ups with Massimiliano Allegri and Pep’s admiration for the player, the interest is undeniable. Only time will tell if this signing is in the works, but for now supporters should cross their fingers as this player would bolster City’s defense immensely, pushing them closer to a strong title challenge.
