Manchester City 2-1 Swansea City, 2017 Premier League: Player Ratings

Manchester City were seemingly cruising towards an easy three points Sunday afternoon against Swansea City. The first half seemed like a City training exercise in possession and chance creation. The second half did not echo the same sentiments. Swansea clearly came out with a point to prove and with City holding on to a narrow one-goal lead, the Swans felt like a draw was still achievable.

As it usually goes with the Sky Blues, Swansea did find their equalizer near the end of the game. City would need a miracle to snatch the three points back, luckily for the team Jesus was on the field. A lot has been made about new signing Gabriel Jesus. Some were superbly optimistic that this 19-year-old Brazilian was the savior to City’s season, while others cautioned not to expect too much out of the kid. Whichever side of the argument you fell on, there’s no denying Jesus’ impact in his short time so far.

Below are the ratings for each player who saw the field for City on Sunday, along with my pick for Man of the Match (not a tough one this week).

Willy Caballero: 6.5

The Argentine keeper seems to have supplanted Bravo for the time being and did a fine enough job in this one. Swansea’s goal was a difficult one to stop but Caballero's save on Swansea’s free kick was a thing of beauty.

Fernandinho: 7.0

The Brazilian midfielder was tasked with playing right back against Swansea and did an admirable job. Whether it was helping to maintain possession or tracking back to defend, Fernandinho certainly gave Pep Guardiola something to think about at the right back spot.

John Stones: 7.5

This was one of Stones' best games. The Englishman was far more "no nonsense" with his clearances than when he was struggling. Pep might not like the long clearances, but City supporters will be glad the ball isn't being turned over in dangerous positions.

Aleksandar Kolarov: 7.0

Another candidate for the mid-season renaissance is Kolarov. After a terrific start playing both at center back and left back, Kolarov’s form went downhill fast but is once again steadily rising.

Gaël Clichy: 6.5

The Frenchman was one of the surprises in the starting eleven but was solid enough in this game. There’s still a few turnovers Clichy could do without, but his performance was fine.

Yaya Touré: 7.5

Touré was once again in the lone defensive midfield role and once again flourished against lesser opposition. Yaya masterfully controlled the pace of the game in the first half and was good with his passes when City needed time to breathe in the second.

David Silva: 7.0

Silva once again put in an excellent performance. At times it looked like the ball was glued to Silva’s foot, and it was magnificent watching him dance around Swansea defenders. Silva is also developing a real chemistry with Leroy Sané out on the left.

Kevin De Bruyne: 6.5

The Belgian played well but not up to his usual superstar standards. It seemed like it just wasn't on the cards for De Bruyne in this one, everything he attempted just never really came off.

Raheem Sterling: 6.5

Another one for the “it just wasn't his day” file. Sterling struggled at points to make an real impact in this game. The Englishman was also booked for diving on a controversial call that surely won't help his case in future scenarios.

Leroy Sané: 7.5

What a player Sané is developing into! At the beginning of the year many City fans were disappointed that such a big-money signing was stuck on the bench so often but he is only 20 years old after all. This kid's confidence is through the roof and at the moment he seems undroppable for Pep.

Gabriel Jesus: 9.0 (City man of the match)

Who else could it have been? Two goals on his Etihad debut including the game winner in stoppage time. What a game this boy had. The late winner shouldn't detract from how fantastic Jesus’ overall game was either. Maybe it’s just youthful exuberance but the way Jesus presses and brings others into the press is certainly helping City at the moment.

Pablo Zabaleta: 6.5

Zabaleta came on to help shore things up at the back and even though City conceded a goal, it certainly wasn't Pablo's fault.

Sergio Agüero: 6.5

The Argentine striker was left on the bench but came on in hopes to be the late hero for City, but that spot (like Agüero’s starting role) was usurped by Gabriel Jesus.
