Alex Scott: England defender retires from international football
Last updated on .From the section Women's Football
England and Arsenal defender Alex Scott has retired from international football.
The 32-year-old right-back is the second most-capped player in England history, with 140 appearances.
She has played at three World Cups and four European Championships since her debut in 2004, scoring 12 international goals during her 13-year career.
England manager Mark Sampson described her as "one of the greatest players to ever wear the England shirt".
"Today is the end of a chapter as I turn the lights out on my England career," Scott said.
"This decision has not come lightly, but sometimes the right choice is the one that involves some sacrifice," she added.
"My dream as a little girl was to one day pull on the Three Lions shirt and represent my country. I am so proud and humbled that I managed to do just that."

Why's everyone so hateful lately?!
Some people need to take their naïve comments elsewhere

Er, because its a football related article, you melon.
I'm so glad I'm not English."
So are millions of English people.
I'm really unsure why some people are just happy to hate these days?? It has to come down to their own insecurity surely? That she has done more than they ever will?!
"Some of us are proud of ANYONE that strives to wear the three lions."
The true English fan - a dying breed, sadly.
It's awful and can barely qualify as a sport.
Yet the English Man can only hate.
I'm so glad I'm not English. Most of you lot are a disgrace to the world, caricatured and reviled for your ridiculous superiority complex."
And this comment has not been flagged as racist. Imagine if someone made these comments about a non-white nation?
You was the first England Ladies name that I can say I remembered and now I can name most of them now as I watch England Ladies all the time thanks to you and the BBC for supporting the women's game.
Alex, you have been fab for England and all the best for the future.
Its no more worthy than paying homage to Bobby Jones (53) retiring after 30 years as keeper of the Dog & Gunn XI
Personally I'd just like to thank her for her service and wish her well.
VanZan however, has shown us he is incapable of thinking like a human being.
Its his upbringing you see... bad attitudes are handed down through the generations and his are appalling, so his forbears werent nice people at all!
;-)
Is it just because she's a woman? Does her being successful/talented/knowledgeable about football, make you that insecure? For those that ask 'who?', she is someone that has done more than you have.
It would be better than putting these articles in with the Men's Football in the vague hope that they will get more hits from people clicking on them by accident.
