Midfielder Ross Barkley has denied Everton's claim that he turned down a transfer deadline-day move to Chelsea after having a medical.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri said Everton had accepted a bid and Barkley had agreed terms.

But the 23-year-old tweeted on Saturdayexternal-link that he had not had a medical "with any club at any point".

"I decided it would be best to make a decision and assess all my options in January when fully fit," he said.external-link

Barkley has a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out for three months.

Everton had initially rejected a £25m offer from Chelsea for the player on Wednesday before reports that a deal had been agreed late on Thursday.

"It is a big surprise but that is football," Moshiri told Sky Sports.

Barkley has less than a year left on his contract and has turned down a new deal at the club he grew up supporting and joined as an 11-year-old.

The academy graduate has played 150 times for Everton in the Premier League, scoring 21 times since making his debut in 2011.

In July, manager Ronald Koeman said the club "100%" expected Barkley to leave Goodison Park.

Analysis - 'a strange situation'

Ross Barkley's transfer to Chelsea was all but done. The fee agreed was between £30m and £35m and personal terms had been settled.

He won't be playing much before December anyway and I'm sure it will be revisited in the New Year. It certainly is a strange situation.

    Maybe Conta will have to consider recalling some of the 43000 players Chelsea have out on loan?

    It's pretty obvious that as he is currently injured until the end of the year he's decided to wait until the January window when Chelsea/Spurs will get him for a nominal fee meaning Barkley will get a bigger signing on fee. He's in it for himself and getting more money. He'll be as popular as mud at Everton as he's cost us c£30M. Koeman will be livid.

    Well done to him I say.

    Barkley wanting to stay wirh Everton and Oxlade-Chamberlain taking less money in order to go to a better suited club.

    These decisions should be applauded in my opinion.

    I am not disappointed at the 3 signings we have lost out on .i am annoyed at some of our players sent back on loan. My hope is that Roman will finally realise that marina
    and emanalo are USELESS. Look at the players they have sold or given away.
    cech ,bertrand ,salah ,de bruyne,lukaku,chalobah,mata,solanke ...not even to mention those out on loan.

    Good! Maybe Conte will have to use some of the youth and B team players and discover a star like Spurs did with Alli and Kane and save money for the new stadium.

    This another case of greed ... he suddenly realised that he won't be playing until xmas (Everton still have to pay him) and then the transfer fee will be much reduced and therefore personal terms or signing on fee will be bigger. Lets hope that he falls flat on his face as at the end of the day he has an attitude problem, is inconsistent and has potential but has not done it ! Chelsea got lucky !

    Last year the pundits said that Chelsea had a bad transfer window when they failed to get Stones & got Luiz instead. They also didn't think that Kante was even worth discussing at that time. Now Kante is the greatest thing since sliced bread & Luiz has performed far better than Stones. Shows what these so called experts know. Drinkwater will be much better for Chelsea than Ox or Barkley.

    It's obvious. The agent and Chelsea know that he can't play for at least 3 months, that's 3 months closer to the January window. Chelsea will offer less and split the difference with Barkley and his agent. It's disgusting that a player can treat the club he supported as a child in such a manner. The game of Football needs to rid itself of agents before it destroys the game once and for all
