Crystal Palace have signed Netherlands defender Jairo Riedewald from Ajax on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Riedewald, 20, previously played for new Palace manager Frank de Boer at the Dutch side, making his first-team debut under him in 2013.

He made 93 appearances and was part of the 2014 Eredivisie title-winning side.

Riedewald is Palace's second signing of the transfer window after Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek joined on a season-long loan deal.

"It is a great opportunity to be working under De Boer once again," Riedewald, who has three caps for the Netherlands, told the Premier League club's website.external-link

    Young, reasonably talented, seems like a good signing for Palace. Hopefully the "undisclosed fee" wasn't too high, but reckon he might do in the PL.

    Good to see a (perhaps) reasonably priced youngster in the PL. I am worried that less and less players are coming through the ranks of their respective clubs, the emphasis still seems to be on spending on other players. By investing in our youth teams (much like Ajax do) we can produce our own talent and enjoy the fact they are home grown. I sound like scummy UKIP but hope you see what I mean.

    As a Palace fan I am happy with this signing. I don't think anyone is expecting him to be a world beater straight out of the box but on a 5-year contract he is clearly one for the future that is going to develop.

    In this current age of stupid transfer fees at only £7.8m it is a bargain in my opinion.

    @Gedders Van Dijk started his career at relative Dutch minnows Groningen and (via Celtic) now he's considered a £60m top PL CB. Playing games is more important for breeding good players, and he's already had 60+ professional games.

    Everyone is safe to develop this year because Huddersfield, Brighton & Swansea have been awful in the transfer market & have weak teams & squads.

    @ 39, I have no authority to judge players, and of course your manager is better placed to make a judgement than the likes of me. You seem to need a lot of new players, however, so what was wrong with the last lot which kept you in the Premier League?

    I am simply saying that foreign managers are signing only foreign players, so where will that leave the England team in a few years' time?

    A club like Palace set out at the start of a season to avoid relegation, They never plan to finish in the top 4/6, just to avoid being bottom 3. Yes there is, & will always be, the LCFC miracle. But you can not plan for miracles. You are either a pragmatist or a dreamer. If this guy is any good then CP will make £10m+ selling him on in a few years time. Keeps the price of half-time pies down.

    @35 (and any one else like you). I've never heard of you. What authority do you have to judge players? FDB knows him, so I'd say he's far better placed to make a judgement than the likes of you.

    We need CBs, he'll be Delaney's replacement. Just need another CB, RB, CF and probably a central midfielder now.
